Dialogue Evening: Gender equity - exploring unconcious bias

Exploring unconcious bias

CH Workshop DRUCK-96.jpg

"I ask myself....How can we, without judgement, come to understand the unconscious gender bias that is ingrained in most of us?"

Please note that there will only be 15 spots in this dialogue, so dont wait to reserve your spot! Also note that the Dialogue will be bilingual (german and english)

This is the question we want to explore in this dialogue, that goes deep into the topic of Gender Equity, and to explore it amongst a diverse group of individuals. We wish to have a conversation where we ask the more difficult question, and open up to talk about the true assumptions, ambiguities, experiences and questions we have regarding our very own patterns, roles, identities, limitations, expectations related to gender.

As a participant you can expect a space for exchange, for learning and for connection. A space where our main focus is to experience and learn from being in the question and in the dialogue itself, rather than on finding answers and produce tangible solutions as fast as possible.

What is a Dialogue Evening?
Dialogue Evenings are 3 hour exchange and conversation, designed to create an authentic, safe and inclusive space in which we enable conversations between a diverse group of people (who would not usually meet) to explore deep connections and new ways of viewing the problems we as individuals or as a collective are facing.
Dialogue Evenings shift the conversations we usually have around difficult, complex and sometimes ambiguous topics, by approaching topics not from a place of debate & problem solving but from a place that explores opinions, experiences, views and questions on a deeper level, to understand their systemic nature.

What questions drive this invitation?
Is this a straight forward problem? Or is there another place we need to start this conversation from?
Is it clear who is the prosecutor and who is the perpetrator in this problem?
What is behind it, when even a declared feminist, realises to have a strong unconscious bias favouring men over women in the work life? Do we all have moments where we unintentionally discriminate a person because of her gender? And what can we learn from these moments? We have all been raised in this culture. How can we, without judgements, come to understand he unconscious gender bias that is ingrained in most of us?

Dont hesitate to reach out to sidsel for any questions :
johanna@diversify.ch

We have already hosted a previous dialogue evening on the 8th of Nov 2018, and many interesting questions came out. Those we would like to build on for the next Dialogue:

  • How much of me is my personal history?

  • Why am I so interested in this topic?

  • How would mindfulness and self-awareness influence unconscious bias & gender inequality?

  • How does having a bias actually affect our lives?

  • How does biology fit into gender equality?

  • What unconscious bias do we have about unconscious bias itself?

  • How can we „switch on“ the unconscious bias radar on our daily thinking?

  • How can we actively detect our unconscious bias in our daily life and in the way we express ourselves?

  • How can we talk about solving the unconscious bias without being attached to talking about the negative impact?

  • Why does every discussion go back to the „mistakes“ women do or the fact that men (and other groups) are also discriminated?

  • Why do we often assume that women need to adapt instead of men/society?

  • Do we talk enough about the unconscious bias, also outside of a protected area?

  • What are the reasons for unconscious bias and should we care about them?

  • What role has biology and history to play in the generation of unconscious biases?

  • Are we talking about equality or equity?

  • How can I raise awareness in my surroundings about biases? Where do I have blind spots? How do I discover them? How can I actively change them?

  • What is a concrete action in my life to be less blind?

  • How can we (m/w) better share responsibilities?

  • What decision-making process can help us be more unbiased?

  • Why, even though I know the way I think is „wrong“, I can’t change the way I feel about something?

  • How can I use dialogue more in everyday life?

Dialogue evening: learning to stay with the trouble

This Dialogue space is about exploring and diving deeply into the question from Donna Harraway. “What happens when human exceptionalism and bounded individualism, those old saws of Western philosophy and political economics, become unthinkable in the best sciences, whether natural or social? Seriously unthinkable: not available to think with".

We aim at become better at holding space for each other while engaging with the deeply disturbing facts of our times and support each other to find a way to keep thinking and feeling our way into the future.

Already 2 prototypes of this dialogue space has happened before. In the last one we did in November, we decided to change the structure of the evening, and add some new elements, like contact improvisation and mindful connection exercises. It turned out that these had a powerful impact, and helped us connect with each other, and the deeper purpose of dialogue, without explaining theories and frameworks. The simple exercise of leaning against someone else back to back, accepting their weight and support, while trusting them to support us, opened up new ways to continue this journey, away from old techniques of problem solving, and towards a more interconnected approach to view ourselves.

It also helped us realise that what we are trying to achieve is a dialogue practice, where we can come together regularly and explore and re-explore different ways to let ourselves make space for other people’s experiences in our mental universe. We think that this will let us alter how we make decisions in our daily life, and how we find new ways towards a more sustainable living.

We would like to invite you to join us further on this journey. We will gather again on January 4th, and continue to think with each other, move and breath with each other, and let us change, without actively pursuing a single goal. The question we would like to propose this time is about practices of caring through memory: Recall one or more instances when in a difficult situation, you remembered something of the shared past and telling this sudden emerging of a memory changed the situation. What was the situation? What memory appeared? Did the other person remember? How did it change the situation?

There will be some snacks and drinks at the event. You are welcome to contribute with anything you like.

Dialogue Evening: how to think in times of societal urgency

We will open this dialogue space again, to take the seeings, learnings and beginning conversation one step further from the first dialogue we had (12th of July). The idea is to continue our exploration, by making the experience a bit more concrete and physical and thereby dive into the question from Donna Harraway for real.

“What happens when human exceptionalism and bounded individualism, those old saws of Western philosophy and political economics, become unthinkable in the best sciences, whether natural or social? Seriously unthinkable: not available to think with"

__________

We ask ourselves:
In the face of irreversible climate change and mass extinction, how can one devise a life of responsibility, contentment and sustainability?

Who is this Dialogue Evening for?
This is an invitation to everybody intrigued to explore a dialogue that goes deep into the topic of sustainability,. To explore with a diverse group of people from all kinds of backgrounds how to stay with the trouble of the planetary condition, without losing hope or giving up.

It is the kind of conversation that dares to ask the difficult questions and sprout authentic responses. A conversation where we want to talk about our relation, ambiguities, experiences and questions we have regarding hope and the future.

Dialogue Evenings shift the conversations we usually have around difficult, complex and sometimes ambiguous topics, by approaching topics not from a place of debate & problem solving but from a place that explores opinions, experiences, views and questions on a deeper level, to understand new dimensions of our patterns and human behaviour. It invites each participant to embark on a personal journey of sharing and listening, with no particular goal in mind apart from participating in an open dialogue.

What drives this invitation?
Sustainable consumption, and generally sustainable development is on the agenda of every organisation and individual who cares to face the facts of climate change. At the same time, the news of daily devastation is in the papers every day:
Switzerland consumes 3x the amount of natural resources available in the country itself. Switzerland ranks second in Europe in waste per capita, at about 700 kg in 2016. Globally, we have lost 52% of our biodiversity since 1970. By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans
When we hear these facts on climate change and consumption we often feel just hopeless and sometimes completely paralysed. Most people do not even want to think about it, not because they are climate change deniers, but because they are overwhelmed.

A lot of organisations and individuals are trying to do the right thing, but what is the right thing to do facing such an ominous challenge? How do we keep hope and contentment? How did we forget that we are all in it together? How can we talk to our children about it?

We are curious to ask and explore what underlying engine is driving this challenge. What is the way to instil a culture of conscious coexistence? What are the intellectual, psychological and practical strategies to navigate the narrow line between denial and desperation? What gets in the way?

There will be some snacks and drinks at the event. You are welcome to contribute with anything you like.

Dialogue Evening: Fairplay at Work

What is this dialogue about?

Why is it worthwhile for a company to hire parents?
What is a father-oriented personnel policy?
What are possible fields of action to support the compatibility of family and career?

In this Meetup, we learn about the positive effects of a family-friendly corporate policy.

Topics such as working hours, workplaces, work organizations, autonomy, support services, personnel work, wages, communication and of course the corporate culture and management will be discussed in a short expert-input.

Of course, we also talk about the job market for mothers and the challenges of hiring parents.

And last but not least, in a fireside discussion, we will discuss proven family-friendly best practice examples and inspiring, cost-effective ideas for a family-friendly working culture.

What is a Dialogue Evening?
Dialogue Evenings shift the conversations we usually have around difficult, complex and sometimes ambiguous topics, by approaching topics, not from a place of debate & problem solving but from a place that explores opinions, experiences, views, and questions on a deeper level, to understand their root causes.

What is Regenerative Travel?

What is Regenerative Travel?

What is regenerative travel?

Our travels almost always do us good. They are ways we open to new people, places and re-create ourselves by setting ourselves free from the routines of work, roles and home life. Regenerative travels allow us to learn, grow, fall in love and potentially make life-changing decisions. We are also aware that we don’t, and can not, pay the full sustainable price to the people we visit or the unique planet we live on. “Nature” and the TagesAnzeiger magazines reported in May this year that Swiss travellers have the highest carbon footprint on the planet. We are expert travellers who are concerned to be socially fair and environmentally respectful. Are we to be blamed for our love and need to travel? How much can we care? This complex constellation of challenges seems unsolvable and yet, there are so many beautiful emergent possibilities that are to be seen around us.

Please come join our circle for dialogue on Friday 17. Aug. from 16:00 until 19:00; Where we will share a space for dialogues to explore this impactful topic, with your help find insights and very likely share some surprising reflections.

I am curious about how we can explore our roles as responsible and sustainable tourists and travellers, and my aim with this afternoon session is to create a space for sharing on this topic as we are coming back from our adventures and share what for us was re-creative and perhaps regenerative. It is a dialogue session, a safe space with no critical discussion or presentation. Please feel free to bring an artefact from a trip which perhaps helps us to more deeply experience the story you might share an experience or place.

The Dialogue sessions by Collaboratio Helvetica are created in order open up ways to talk about complex subjects that have no easy answers and yet must be discussed. We host spaces for social innovation with dialogue sessions and living labs on the challenging topics of our times. We work locally and yet throughout Switzerland to bring together people and begin from within with sensing, working through and sharing into the group what is emerging into society.

And therefore we look forward to hearing your stories.

Keith Riggs has worked as an eco-products designer, sustainable services consultant and regularly facilitates workshops and events on circular economy business innovation. He also loves to travel.

Dialogue Evening: can work be regenerative?

📌 What's a Dialogue Evening?
A Dialogue Evening is a simple 3h format with basic rules, such as speak from the I and deep listening, through which any group can explore a topic that matters to them and
the society they are embedded in.

💼 What's this event about?
The question we are interested in is: “How can we work towards a way of working that is regenerative to us as human beings, our organisations and our planet?”
This is an invitation to everybody intrigued to explore a dialogue that goes deep into the topic of regenerative work and to explore it with people from all kinds of backgrounds, from artist to refugee to party animals, from CEO to job-seeker.

🎯 Where does this topic come from?
The topic about regenerative work is more than just about well-being, happy employees or work-life balance. Everywhere we look we can see the world - and our experience in it - speeding up: Businesses and organisations in any sector are continuously asked to deliver more with less, more innovation and less time to imagine & dream about it, more output and less resources to achieve it, and so on. there is a certain story that we have been telling ourselves about what it means to be successful and what it means to be happy, which for now is focused on doing or having always “more”. Later than sooner we realise that the to do list are bottomless and that “getting stuff done” works like a boomerang.
We promote more happiness, health and well-being at work while somehow trying to put away the feeling that it’s not just all make-up: inviting us to hide the tiredness and burn-out with a smile on our faces. Companies well-being programs are well intended, and still below all these efforts they are sold to us as a tool to further optimise ourselves for more efficiency. So much so that in case we still can’t cope with the demands, we are left with only one conclusion: it’s me that is not enough.
